CALC is the General Charitable Trust of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. It has been approved by the Charity Commissioners and the Inland Revenue.
The Trustees are appointed by the Court of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. There must be no fewer than three, and they must be liverymen of the Worshipful Company. Unless the Court determines otherwise two of the Trustees shall be the Master and Almoner of the Company for the time being ex officio. It is the present practice of the Court to appoint Trustees for three year terms of office, renewable for one term. The administration of the Trust is managed by the Clerk to the Trustees.
The objects of the Trust are widely drawn to support general charitable purposes, including the relief of poverty, the advancement of education, the advancement of religion and other charitable purposes for the public benefit.
The Trustees realise the charitable objectives of the Trust by making grants to various causes within the Trust's remit. It is the general policy of the Trustees to support causes which have the purpose of advancing education and/or benefiting the disadvantaged and where CALC's contribution will be significantly incremental. The principal activities in recent years have been the annual Master's project, supported by the Trustees on the Master's recommendation, and the Educational Initiative, launched in 1997. Grants totalling £50000 were made to five good causes under the 2001 Master's project. Under the education project grants totalling £86000 to 41primary schools throughout England and Wales were made in the three years ending 29 September 2000. It is the aim of the Trustees to distribute all or most of annual income by way of grant.
CALC depends on Liverymen of the Worshipful Company for its funding. From their donations in the past it has built up a fund of approximately £lm, and applies current donations and investment income in making grants. In the year to 29 September 2001 CALC made grants totalling £114000, the first time grants have exceeded £100000 in a year.
Copies of CALC's annual report and audited financial statements are circulated to Liverymen annually. Copies may be obtained from the Company Clerk - e-mail clerk@wccaew.org.uk.
Liverymen are encouraged to make donations under Giftaid and by standing order. For information about how to make donations or apply for grants, please contact the clerk - clerk@wccaew.org.uk.
