The General Charitable Trust

The Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales General Charitable Trust, or CALC for short, is the charity established by the Court of the WCCAEW to meet an essential requirement of livery companies to give to charitable causes.

The trustees of CALC are appointed by the Court of the livery company. The Almoner, normally a Past Master, acts as the chairman of the trustees and the day-to-day administration is undertaken by the Clerk to the Trustees.

The Objects of the Trust are very wide:

  • The relief of poverty throughout the world
  • The advancement of education throughout the world
  • The advancement of religion throughout the world
  • Such other charitable purposes anywhere in the world as are for the benefit of the United Kingdom community.

The usual policy for making grants within these Objects is to;

  • Make grants to beneficiaries introduced by liverymen.
  • Make grants to causes where the grant will make a significant difference to the recipient.
  • Support causes which are associated with accountancy, the profession, the City and the Livery.
  • Favour causes with an emphasis on education and helping the disadvantaged, including the relief of need and poverty.

In a typical year, CALC gives away between £100,000 and £120,000, as follows:

  • £30,000 to £35,000 to one or more causes selected by the Master.
  • £35,000 to £40,000 to the Education Project-to improve literacy and numeracy in Primary Schools.
  • £15,000 to fund a bursary for a member of the Institute to study for a PhD in a subject connected to accountancy.
  • £10,000 to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to fund bursaries for music therapy students.
  • £5,000 to MANGO which provides management accounting support to Non Government Organisations, mainly in the third world.
  • £2,500 to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal
  • £10,000 to £20,000 to other causes.

All liverymen are strongly encouraged to commit themselves to giving regularly to CALC . Through the generosity of present and past liverymen, CALC has built up an endowment fund, the income from which augments the annual donations made by liverymen. The trustees usually distribute virtually all the trust’s income each year.

Liverymen  are also encouraged to leave a legacy to CALC in their wills.
