| Visit to Christ’s Hospital School |
|
This year the Master decided that, rather than a formal reception, she would organise something different. Consequently, some 30 members were warmly welcomed at Christ’s Hospital to begin an interesting and informative day. The first part of the visit was a fascinating tour of the school museum, which records the school’s history over 450 years since it was established by King Edward VI who granted it a Royal Charter. Katie Callas, from the school staff, talked about the way the school had developed, about how it provided supported education to a majority of its pupils, the development of the present buildings at Horsham in 1902 and the bringing together of the boys and girls schools under one roof in only 1985 to become a co-educational school. It surprised members to see how many of the school’s former pupils were well known names in all walks of life and professions. While the boys and girls may not enjoy quite the same sort of lunch that we all had in the court room, nevertheless, catering standards are clearly very good. Before the remaining tour of the school’s facilities we saw the formal entry of the whole school to lunch, preceded by the school brass band and everyone marching into the dining hall in their respective houses. Our guides for the tour were three boys who proudly showed the excellent facilities, including a splendid theatre, library and fine chapel. One of the boys rounded off the afternoon by showing us the magnificent tones of the organ with some accomplished playing. As a former member of the staff at the school, the Master had arranged an excellent day, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. |
